Subchorionic bleeds are often seen during the first trimester. In most cases, they are of no consequence.

Many women are surprised to find out just how far along they are in their pregnancies when they see their obstetrician for the first time. Bleeding during the first trimester is not uncommon, and many women think they are actually having a period. Subchorionic hemorrhage is not the result of anything the mother has done. It is suspected that subchorionic hemorrhage occurs from the rapid growth of the gestational sac.

Ultrasound

First trimester ultrasound is done for early pregnancy bleeding or spotting. It is often done to confirm the viability of an early pregnancy and to acquire an accurate due date. Many things are seen on the first trimester ultrasound, most of them normal. Subchorionic hemorrhages are often seen during this ultrasound. While it is considered to be an abnormality, it is seen in many pregnancies and often is of no consequence.

Also known as a subchorionic hematoma, it is often seen using transvaginal sonography. Most subchorionic hemorrhages are small and will not have an effect on the pregnancy. They generally clear up by the second trimester. Subchorionic hemorrhage is a possible cause for vaginal bleeding, which occurs in 25% pregnancies according to Avneesh Chhabra, M.D. (eMedicine: Subchorionic Hemorrhage).

Using ultrasound, subchorionic hemorrhages are usually seen as an anechoic (black) area. Some hematomas may look the same as the placenta (isoechoic) and may not be seen. Larger hematomas are more likely to contribute to a poor outcome and may cause bleeding throughout the duration of the pregnancy.

Ultrasound does not always show the presence of a subchorionic hemorrhage, especially when vaginal bleeding is present. This is because the blood may not remain contained in the subchorionic space around the gestational sac while it flows into the vaginal canal. If no fluid collection is present, it cannot be seen on ultrasound. According to Dr. Chhabra, subchorionic hemorrhages are associated with 4-33% of miscarriages. This does not necessarily mean that they are the cause or are associated with the cause of miscarriage, but that they are present.

Third Trimester

Subchorionic hemorrhages generally clear up in the first trimester, and may be a sign of something more serious late in the pregnancy. Subchorionic hemorrhages in the third trimester may result in placental abruption, although this is not common. Placental abruption is the tearing of the placenta from the uterine wall. It is accompanied by abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding.

Treatment

Subchorionic hemorrhages are generally followed with serial ultrasounds. Depending on the extent of the hemorrhage, the patient may be asked to abstain from sexual intercourse and strenuous activity. If the hemorrhage is large, increasing in size, or is associated with a multiple pregnancy, bed rest may be prescribed. Most often, the subchorionic hemorrhage resolves, bleeding stops, and the pregnancy continues without complication.

I too have been diagnosed with this. I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant. Mine is small (1 cm x .8 cm), and my Dr. seems pretty optimistic that it will resolve itself. She told me its more common than we (regular people) know and is NOT the result of anything I did.

I was diagnosed today with this, at 7 weeks also. I am a little worried since my last child was 5.5 weeks premature due to a septum in my uterus. The septum was removed in October and the Doc said everything looked perfect and that I could go on try for our second child. We did and now this? It's going to be a waiting game he said.

I was just diagnosed with this as well, but I am 14 weeks and according to the ultrasound it is quite large. I have 4 healthy babies at home, and have had no other problems with bleeding like this. I'm still a little worried, but my doctor said that there is still a good chance that this pregnancy will continue with no complications. Good luck to all in the same situation!

I started bleeding when I was 5 wks 5 dys pregnant & had to go to the E.R. Surprisingly, the Dr. on call didn't see anything 'wrong" but my Practitioner said that the ultrasound done at the E.R shows that I have this. It was reassuring to know that it usually heals on its own

I was diagnosed with this on my 9th week, my bleeding is not as bad, mostly brown blood. My doctor said it usually goes away on its own. Just taking it easy and careful of what you do will be the best to do. I feel real good about this article it made me feel much better and less concerned.

I was diagnosed with a SCH yesterday, after my 3rd visit to the doctor with bleeding, the last being the heaviest. I am 12 wks, 5 days, and very nervous since I was not told the size of the hematoma. I can't call the doctor's office for 3 more days due to the holiday weekend to get more information, but hope to try and take it easy as much as possible - not easy with an almost 3 year old who doesn't understand. Wishing you all a healthy pregnancy and that we will make it through this.

I went to the OB on May 24th for my first ultrasound (5 wks 5 days) and had to do a transvaginal ultrasound, as they did not see the baby. They did see the baby and the heartbeat and everything was fine. 3 days later, on May 27th, I experienced very light spotting when I wiped and became nervous. I went to the OB on May 28th (6 wks 2 days) and had a regular ultrasound and everything was ok. Then, over the weekend, the bleeding was a little more prominent, so I went in again on June 2nd (7 weeks) for another ultrasound. They noticed that I had a small bleed, which they didn't give me a diagnosis of, and told me to go on complete pelvic rest. The baby was ok and growing and the heartbeat was good. As I read more and more, I know I am experiencing SCH. My doctor didn't seem concerned and said sometimes these "small bleeds" go away on their own. She recommended drinking lots of water, no intercourse, and no heaving lifting. I have a pelvic exam on June 7th and I hope all is OK.

I am currently 14 weeks pregnant with twins and was diagnosed with this about a week and a half ago.Currently I am still doing some light to moderate spotting but have not been put on bed rest yet. Dr's did seem hopeful that it will resolve. The article was definately helpful and made me a little more at ease, but still nervous with the multiple pregnancy.

i wish more people dealing with this could read the article. one of the best i found on the subject. i was diagnosed with this a week ago (9 weeks). doc wasn't too concerned but scheduled a follow-up ultrasound a week later (today). he told me the blood would either be absorbed by the body or expelled. since mine was so close to my cervix the likelihood of it being expelled (i.e. spotting) was great. this weekend i started bleeding much worse and freaked out! today i found out why... the hematoma went from 4cm down to 6mm. oh, and the hematoma is nowhere near the baby. point is, if it's an issue for you, don't freak out, see your doc, ask lots of questions (like where is this hematoma - for me knowing it was nowhere near the baby made a world of difference), and don't listen to all the people on the boards who want to tell you all about their miscarriage. trust your doc over the internet. i'm starting to realize alot of people are just ignorant!

Thank you. I started bleeding very heavy at 8 weeks (like a fountain, the way my doctor described it) I was put on bedrest in the hospital for 2 days then moved home to continue bedrest the rest of the pregnancy. My hematoma was very large and the doctor didnt think the baby would ever make it. He told me to prepare myself for a miscarriage :( Which I've had already and I know how horrible that feels, physically and emotionally. I listened to his orders and delivered my little man 1 week early by c-section. (I also had placenta previa) I had a happy, healthy baby boy. I still remember my doctor saying "This is great, I really didnt think we would be here months ago" God is good. Prayer can move mountains...

At 9 weeks I started bleeding very heavily. We had no idea what was going on, there was no pain. I just started gushing blood out. We went to the ER were we found out our baby was still alive and then later found out I had a SCH. I am now 39 weeks and having her tomorrow via c-section. My bleeding stopped within 3 hours of it starting, but I did lose A LOT of blood.

I was diagnosed with this 3 days ago. My health isn't the greatest. I have Addisons, hypothyroid, gastroparesis, and inflammation in my tummy. I have had a total of 5 miscarrages four being over the last year! I also have a bad clotting factor so i am giving myself daily lovenox injections and due to the extreme nausea and vomitting I am on a Zofran pump. I was total the bleed is large, that it increases my risk for a miscarrage and see my doctor in 5 days again! I am bleeding moderate to heavy with maybe 5 clots a day. I see a lot of you were placed on bed rest, it concerns me as to why I am not on bed rest....Do you think that my doctor just thinks the miscarrage is going to happen no matter what? What do I do? I love my OB and he has been in practice for decades!! Hopen for the best....

I went to the hospital about 4 times since and it is due to my bleeding because it is really heavy when I bleed. I just went to the doctor yesterday and they told me that it has grown from 3.4 to 5.8cm (left side) and it looks like I'm getting another one on my right side. I am very scared and not sure how to take this news I'm on bed rest but I feel so helpless

I have been diagnosed with chronic abruption my placenta is torn alittle bit from my uterine wall my doctor sent me to a perinatal hospital 2 hrs. away from where I live where they looked at me more and told me that Dec. 7th I will be admitted into the hospital and the baby will be given steroids for his lungs, I have been bleeding chronically this entire pregnancy since I found out in August and have had severe abdominal pain so they will deliver the baby by C-section when he is considered viable, The doctor told me that my chances of hemmoraging after delivery we're very high and that my son may not make it... I'm definatly scared and could use some reassurance...

I had heavy bleeding over Thanksgiving at 13 weeks. It took several days to get an ultrasound done and my doctor seemed sure the SCH would resolve itself by my 22 wk ultrasound. She said to take it real easy, I had to laugh because my husband works out of town and we have a four year old and an 11 month old. I pray everything will be alright.

I started having bleeding and cramping at 5 1/2 weeks pregnant. I went to the ER and they did an ultrasound but didn't see anything in my uterus except a "possible" yolk sac. I was put on pelvic rest and had a follow up ultrasound at 6 1/2 weeks. In the meantime I continued to have moderate bleeding and lost my only pregnancy symptom ( sore breast.) At the 6 1/2 week ultrasound a subchorionic bleed from two places in my uterus was detected and also a heart beat. I was put on bed rest. At 8 weeks I had another ultrasound and the bleeding had stopped on one side and had lessened on the other. I had also noted that I was having less vaginal bleeding. I am on bed rest for another week and I hope that the bleeding stops completely. Some doctors do not prescribe bed rest but I personally encourage it. At the very least pelvic rest : no intercourse, no heavy lifting, no strenuous housework. I think its helping for me! Good luck to anybody who is going through this same situation.

I experienced my first bleeding when i was 6 weeks pregnant. That was Nov 13, 2010. The next day I went to my OB and request me to have my first ultrasound. From there, found out a small subchorionic hemorrage. I went back to my OB right after that ultrasound that same day. She told me to drink 2 meds to stop bleeding. I also had once an injectable (progesterone) to rather stop bleeding and relieve us from worrying. That is suppose to be done thrice a week, but so expensive because it was an imported one. Nov 15, I still had a bleeding, i went to hospital ( DR...as my doctor instructed me to do so)...I was admitted for 2 weeks in the hospital. After a week in the hospital I had a massive bleeding for almost 4 days, they had me an ultrasound and saw a huge hemorrage, much much larger than the first 2 ultrasound.Still the baby is very ok. with good heart beat. (Thanks God!) They even increased the dosage of my meds. Nov. 26, after that confinement, I was sent home and continue my complete bed rest at home. Now, I am at my 13 weeks of my pregnancy and still on bed rest, but not really complete because I sometimes went out of my bed because of so much depression Im encountering right now, since this is the time of a holiday season, where everyone is going to mall for shopping, im here at my bed waiting to dissolve the hemorrage for almost a month already. I did not have spotting or bleeding for almost a month already, but the best rest still continue because my last ultrasound last dec 29 was not good. There is still a subchorionic hemorrage, and beginning to increase its size again. I was so terribly dissappointed and depressed. I want to go back to work already. And take care of my 2 healthy sons. But I felt that I had a bomb on my body and anytime it will explode when I use to move inappropriately. I am praying a lot, and hoping soon all is going to be ok and normal, and I'm going to have a healthy happy pregnancy since I am expecting that this baby is a girl already, thats why I take all the doctor's advice to protect my baby.

this article is very reassuring. i had to go to the er a few nights ago and my doctor told me i had sch but didnt explain anything about what it was or what i would experience. i am very confused as to why he didnt tell me to rest or lay off the pelvic activity because i was told none of this. he actually thought it was funny that i came in for the severe cramps until he did my ultrasound. did everyone elses doctors tell them to go easy on themselves because mine even told me i could go back to work that very night.

I am 20 weeks now and have been bleeding everyday since 9 weeks. Baby looks great every sono. The doc is saying my is a continous bleed to the hemorrhage. I see a specialist this week to see if we can find where its coming from. Still keeping my head up, I feel my lil man kicking everyday!! Sitting on bedrest is not fun with four kids running around, but it will be worth it I know it. Good luck ladies I know how hard this is, wishing everyone the best!!!!

I went to the ER with mild bleeding as well and was later diagnosed with SCH as well. The bleeding was brownish in color as well and I have two anterior hemorrhages. The doctor told me to take it easy and no sex for at least 2 weeks, to wear a pad and the bleeding should clear up. I was really worried, but this article and other people's accounts made me feel better about my pregnancy. THis is my first pregnancy, so I'm constantly worrying. But one thing I would suggest is just to listen to your body. It will tell you a lot. Plus, there's nothing wrong w/being extra cautious.....this is your baby you're talking about. I wish you all the best in your pregnancy.

The article was helpful. At 11 weeks I had a BIG bleed which was a hematoma that was considered an 'old' bleed. At the check-up u/s I have a 'new' bleed that is a half moon around the baby. Quite large. I've been on bedrest for over a week now & have 3 young boys. I go see the high-risk specialist in a few days. I am very scared & am praying all the time.

Before I say anything else, a friend who went through bed rest for premature rupture of the membranes sent me this link of helpful bed rest resources: http://sidelines.org/ .
I am having a similar experience to the experiences of the August 3, October 7, November 5, December 31, January 23 posts. I had a missed-miscarriage last fall in my 14th week due to a septated uterus (also very uncommon), and delivered my daughter vaginally at the start of my 18th week. My Perinatologist gave my husband and me the go-ahead to get pregnant again a month later, since the septum appeared to have been torn out during the delivery and since healed.
We got pregnant without any effort (Praise the Lord!), but I had my first hemorrhage (small) at 5 weeks 3 days and the on-call doctor (of course neither my OB/GYN nor my Perinatolgist were available that day) gave me this whole spiel about bleeding being normal. She prescribed pelvic rest until the bleeding stopped (I am a teacher, on my feet all day, and she let me continue working). I went in for a scheduled viability ultrasound with my normal OB/GYN at 6 weeks 2 days, who told me everything looked fine, and reassured me of that again when I hemorrhaged (small) again the next day. Even my Perinatologist assured me the bleeding was normal when I saw him for a scheduled consultation at 7 weeks 2 days.
Unfortunately, at 7 weeks 5 days, the hemorrhaging got much worse. After I'd soaked my 3rd maxi pad in an hour, I called the clinic's nurse line (after-hours) who contacted the on-call doctor who told me to wait and see what happened: if the bleeding continued or worsened, go to the ER; if the bleeding decreased call my normal OB in the morning and ask for an ultrasound. The bleeding relented after a couple of hours, and I got a little sleep. I almost went to work the next day because the doctors had all down-played the severity of the issue so much. THANK GOD I DIDN'T!
When I went in for my ultrasound at 7 weeks 6 days, a nurse escorted me from the normal radiology suite to the Perinatology suite in the opposite wing of the clinic where I was given another ultrasound and the prognosis of a "large bleed". Doctors seem to all forget that the rest of us don't speak medical-ese so little further explanation was given at that time, and I was so shocked that I couldn't think of many questions to ask. Bed rest was prescribed with weekly ultrasounds to check baby's viability and the state of my uterus, and I still hemorrhage about 1 or 2 times each week (passing clots as small as a quarter to as big as my fist) and take iron supplements keep my blood level at a somewhat normal level. At 13 weeks 4 days, I was hospitalized overnight when my uterus contracted. Of course, neither my regular OB/GYN nor my Perinatolgist were available that day either, and the on-call doctor told me I would certainly miscarry within the day, despite the (incredibly painful!) ultrasound scan that showed the baby still growing with a strong heartbeat. He recommended scheduling a D&C. I didn't take that option; I stood up for my baby's right to life. My 13 week 5 day ultrasound revealed a full-on placental abruption, but I'm now 15 weeks 3 days pregnant with a 50/50 chance of making it to viability.
I've found that asking for help is necessary. My friends, family, and church have been great, helping me set up a meal schedule at foodtidings.com, visiting (and sending communion), and even a few offers to help us clean the house! I also contacted my insurance to make sure the tests are covered and to look into disability benefits since I've been unable to work for 2 months.
The article was ok...a bit sugarcoated for my taste. But then again, I guess we all have special circumstances, don't we.

I had this at 16 week. Mine was 11cmX8cmX5cm... I had a lot of bleeding and cramping but I am now at 32 weeks and so far a perfectly healthy active fetus. I have another ultrasound in a week or so to check on it again... Advice to all the women that get diagnosed with this issue... Expect the worst but hope for the best. Good vibes and friends and family support really helped me.love your partner and make sure they are loving back.... Good luck to all of you and your baby...

Guest from March 22,

Not sugar-coated. This article is simply about subchorionic hemorrhage, which is *not* what you had. You had a placental abruption which is an incredibly serious condition. Subchorionic hemorrhage is incredibly common. In fact, I was surprised *not* to see a subchorionic hemorrhage when I did first-trimester ultrasounds. That's how common it is. This article is meant to illustrate that reality.

I was diagnosed with the same thing at 8 weeks. The dr put me on pelvic rest.It started off as 1cm. In a four week period when I was 12 weeks, the dr said it had got bigger, it was 5cm but the baby was doing ok. Then 2 weeks later when I was 14 weeks I had a miscarriage. I'm not trying to scare anybody, but I think this a little problem that you have to take serious. At the same time don't let it stress you out. I wish everybody the best that has this problem and they have a better outcome then me.

im 7 weeks had light pink bleed then went dark brown only for about an hr ... i went to see my dr who sent me for a scan baby had a heart beat & made me feel at ease to then be told i have a haematoma between the sac & cervix which covers 30% of the chrionic margin . the midwife said its not good as its under baby & if it comes away it could pull baby away with it, if it was the side she would of felt happier . im now on full bed rest for the next few weeks .... im so worried as im not having any regular check she said just to go to my booking in as normal but thats over 4 weeks away .... i would of felt more at ease if they was to scan me or something again in a week or 2 .
